In product development, creating impactful features requires more than just good ideas. As product people, we face many common issues regardless of company or development team size, and it’s important to identify how we can collectively become aware of these and find ways to improve them. If anything, for the sake of our users and our sanity.

This edition dives into five essential strategies that, despite their initial complexities, lead to better and more user-focused features. We’ll see how each approach, from user-centric design to effective risk management, plays a crucial role in shaping successful products.

User-Centric Design Thinking

Adopting user-centric design thinking might require more upfront effort in understanding user needs, but this approach leads to features that truly resonate with users.

Product managers can develop features that meet and exceed user expectations by deeply analyzing user behavior and preferences.

This investment in user research pays off by creating products more likely to succeed in the market.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation

Continuous learning and adaptation can be challenging due to the need for ongoing vigilance and flexibility.

However, this approach allows product teams to stay ahead of trends and technological advancements, leading to cutting-edge and relevant features.

Over time, this constant evolution ensures that the product remains competitive and meets changing user needs.

Risk Management

Implementing thorough risk management processes can be time-consuming initially, but it’s essential for developing features.

Product teams can avoid costly mistakes and delays by anticipating and planning for potential issues.

This proactive approach ensures that the development process is smoother and that the final features are more robust and reliable.

How you address risk can vary, but it is good to document these upfront and determine how you might identify when they are impacting and, if possible, mitigate them.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

While cross-functional collaboration might involve coordination challenges, it brings diverse perspectives and expertise into the feature development process.

This collaboration results in more comprehensive and well-rounded features, as they are informed by insights from various angles — from technical feasibility to market appeal.

The synergy from different departments adds significant value to the feature’s development.

As I’ve mentioned in many posts along the way, you should be consistently building relationships with your stakeholders/contributors to help ensure you are getting great insights from them to help within the product development process.

Feedback Loops for Customers and Development Teams

Setting up feedback loops with customers and development teams requires effort in gathering and analyzing feedback, but it’s vital for continuous improvement.

Customer feedback leads to features closely aligned with user needs and preferences.

Similarly, input from development teams can refine the development process, leading to more efficient and effective feature creation.

A natural spot for this is in a retro if you are doing them — if not, I think it’s good to carve out time to do something similar at least once a month to ensure continual alignment.

Final Thoughts

Despite the initial effort, approaches like the ones above, such as user-centric design and cross-functional collaboration, result in innovative and practical products.

The underlying theme across each of these lies within your ability to communicate — with your team and users- on paper and verbally. If you need to work on communication, I highly suggest bumping that to the top of your growth priority list, as the implications are huge for your and your products ‘ growth.
